Steve's Politics update!

Boring sounding UK politics issue of the day:
Recently, the UK has brought in laws to allow pubs and bars to serve alcohol after 11pm. Before that, we were still using the rules brought in because of WW1. At the time, idiots more conservative members of society screamed that 24-hour drinking would lead to drunken chaos, rising crime and drink related deaths for everybody!!

The facts:
As reported in the Independent today, Serious Violent Crime has fallen 21% (some towns 42%) and there are 14% fewer injuries. Pub owners report that people aren't buying 20 pints at 10.58pm, and huge crowds don't hit the streets at 11.30 anymore. So in fact, the predicted apocalypse that the "liberalisation" of these laws would bring, didn't happen. And the benefits everyone else expected, did.

Conclusion:
Well, duh.

Slight point of clarification - I thought it was WW1?

Additionally, the Police were given extra money during this period to manage the potential problem. More money = more overtime = more coppers making a presence on the streets, able to prevent/discourage/intercede.

Now that money has gone, this next 6 months will be the ideal time to see what happens.

It was.

Steve! I came home this evening with two very easy entries to write, one for the journal, one for the blog.

You've done them both already. Git. ;-)

Ah well, I'll just have to quote you again.

See, we're obviously both on the cutting edge of society interest...

Ack. Er... sorry!

It's not like I actually care. Need to do a follow up anyway, was planning it this week before I saw the headline. Besides, I get to reference this from ages back, which remains one of the best bits I read on the subject. Then, The Sharpener is usually worth reading.

Oh, on the writing professionally bit:

Hey, I like that. Thanks.

Charlie Brooker: GENIUS. If I'd known it was that easy, I'd had changed jobs long ago.

Hurrah! Closing time here (NI) is generally 11.30 weekdays or 1ish weekends. In Belfast some clubs stayed open til 3 or so, and there were 1 or 2 last chance saloons open til 6ish.
Then the police had a Crack Down saying everything had to close at 1.30 on the dot. Suddenly, everyone got out at exactly the same time, with no mission of getting a taxi, no other way home (late night public transport? WTF is THAT?) and nowhere to go. Guess what happened?

I rarely even bother going out in the city centre or anywhere particularly far from home these days as it is almost impossible to get home without standing in the street for an hour trying desperately to get a taxi while avoiding fights and general drunken crowds. Great move cops!

Before that tho, the later opening hours didn't exactly lead to the Downfall of Society (we have much better ways of doing that!).

is this for outer cities? I ask because in London I drank ale in a pub after 11:30.

Some could apply for late licences, but the fear was that applying it to the whole country would suddenly make everyone drink more and not go to work. Or something. I don't know.

Yes, plenty of clubs and pubs did it already, but they had to specifically apply before.

Um, no. It was the whole of England. (Scotland, I know, has had different licencing laws for a very long time, and I can't speak about the other devolved Administrations)

However, there has been, for a long time, mechanisms in place for drinking after hours. Those are extended licences (which are applied for through the courts and can be denied or revoked) or illegal lock-ins.

A lot of pubs in Central London have had extended hours for years in order to capture as many tourists as possible. Though, interestingly, these are pubs that are less likely to serve a decent pint of ale (more's the pity!)

Phew. I saw the headline when I rushed past the corner shop this morning. In my haste I thought it was the Mail or Express ranting on about the increased violence due to "24 hour" drinking. I was off to look for the headline and then rant about it in my journal.

Hurrah to me not having to now!

Yeah but it means when I go to the pub I accidentally drink till 1am before checking the time!

Have you ever considered a career as a political correspondent? I think you'd do an awesome job.

Heh! No, I think they're looking for dynamic prose a little more insightful than "That's bollocks, that is"...

It would work on The Daily Show (which, incidentally, is the only decent news show left on cable).

You know, I'm working on a fanzine with someone in Ireland. If it goes on to a second issue, would you like to contribute some political essays/rants? We could use some good writers. Unfortunately we can't pay you, but it would get your work out to a wider audience.

He is brilliant; I love reading his entries. I friended him, but I don't know if he friended me back. That might make getting his attention a bit difficult, as he might not reply to someone he doesn't know.

Anyway, here's some info on the fanzine and what we have planned for the first issue. Deadline for stories is March 15, so you still have time.
