Steve's Politics update in 10 seconds.
Summarising the political issues of the day,
so you don't have to listen to boring stuff.

I realise that most people don't care much about politics - it's often boring and opinionated, and they couldn't care less what I have to say about it regardless.
However! there are those who use LJ as a quick means of finding out what's going on in the world, and to them I say: this is for you!

Boring sounding politics issue of the day:
Ruth Kelly is the UK Education secretary, famous for being part of the "secretive ultra-strict and a bit bonkers" Catholic cult Opus Dei, which has systems for members to commit serious self-harm because they're not strict enough or pure enough and must chastise the flesh. She is therefore perfect to be in a position to influence the nation's children.

Today's controversy:
People say she should resign because... well, it's something new this time, but basically she's really rubbish.

The facts:
  • She's really rubbish, and should resign.
  • It's not about the sex offenders scandal, she's just bollocks.
  • The National Union of Teachers graded her "an F". She's annoying, her ideas for education are laughable, and she's basically an Economist who should have stuck with working for the banks.

So there you have it, incontestable proof and you can now sound intelligent and informed on that issue whenever it comes up.

Tomorrow: Steve solves the Middle East crisis in two paragraphs.

To be fair, I don't base my opinions on anything as 'substantial' as the BBC news. I just think she's really rubbish now, and always has been.

Heh, generally their reports aren't that much more indepth than yours. In fact they are generally less so ;p

Nice summation of Opus Dei too!

I daren't write any more on Opus Dei, I'd end up shouting at work.

Let's just say that I think their beliefs and social/spiritual leanings are one of the closest things to evil that society faces today, and leave it at that.

The BBC should hire you as an analyst.

She's really rubbish, and should resign
True, although that would remove a vital distracting factor for Bliar's govt

You have an interesting definition of the word "solve". I am, however, having trouble coming up with a solution that doesn't involve just a leeeetle bit of the old murder. Am still working on it, expect to have made major progress by lunchtime.

I believe it is a theory first proposed by Alan Clarke re Northern Ireland.

Ah well there you go, it's not a leetle bit of murder - it's lots.

But then again, think of the economic benefits - a large amount of land unused with a pre-existing infrastructure.
In fact, if it works there, why not export the idea - Indonesia & SE Asia - human rights issues?
Bang - there you go, no more problems there.

Do it a couple of times, and then see who starts whinging.

...Riiight.

I'm beginning to see why LJ politics is such a... diverse place.

I agree, dropping a great big bomb on it would certainly stop the conflict. It may result in the relatives and politically-friendly factions hunting down whoever did it, crying 'never forget' and elevating the deceased to the status of martyrs in a holy war, but that's a problem for another day.

Well, it's not something I'd seriously advocate.

Still, have to deal with muppet managers who fail to complete tasks they said would be done months ago does little for my patience or indeed temperament.

AC's argument was to eliminate about 400 or so from either side, which should calm things down for a generation or so.

I was under the impression that's already the agenda for the middle east.

Iraq, oil + population= inconvenient

You know this possibly tops my previous favourite NI solution, the stunning "We should just stick them all on an island somewhere and let them shoot each other".

Hmm. It appears this may be trickier than I had expected. It's actually got easier recently with Sharon and Arafat out of the picture, but harder again now Iran is acting up. Given some of the comments from them and Israel in the past ("they must be wiped off the map, nothing less", "we have plans to take them with us if they do" etc) this may simplify things, but only if your idea of civilisation is checking your cave to see if the radiation cloud has reached it yet.

I feel confident that I can reach a satisfactory solution, but it may take until breakfast-time tomorrow.

Hmmm,

America is to stand back
Israel to follow the UN requirements regarding its illegal occupation.

Then, we all step back flog all the arms possible to all sides, and let political darwinism take its course?
